Pineapple Dreams

Inspired by many variation I’ve seen on IG. I kind of fell in love with the very happy pineapples and wanted to make a quilt, no surprise there! I don’t normally make 2-color quilts, but the yellow is so happy. Originally the large pineapple was going to be on the back, but it was so cute, that I incorporated it into the top.

Without borders, the top measures 52″ x 74″. I left the decision on borders for once the top is assembled. Found a fantastic green & yellow batik that looks like leaves at Capital Quilts. I didn’t think it would work but it’s the perfect fabric for a thin inner border! Already had the perfect binding – found it a quilt shop near Berkeley CA. Having over-cut my yellow fabrics, I had lots of yellow strips, which meant that I made a piano-key border and then added cute green corners. The final top photo of the my Pineapple Dream quilt is at the bottom of this post and I am very happy with how it turned out!

Originally I made 15 blocks and then layed out the remaining 2.5″ squares into a giant pineapple block. To make the quilt top symmetrical, one more block was needed, to a total of 16.

This xtra large pineapple is equivalent to four smaller blocks, measuring 16″ x 32″, and it needed a 1″ border all around to properly fit into the layout.

This is the final layout with a missing block. I did have make one more after all! All units used in the blocks measure 2.5″ square. Each block is made with 16 yellow units and 4 HSTs in the corners. The green pineapple tops are made with 4 green HSTs, 6 green/neutral HSTs and 2 neutral corner squares. Small block measures 8″ x 16″.

I wasn’t working from a pattern, and ended up cutting way too many yellow strips and too many neutral strips. I will use most of the neutral extras for the sashing. Perhaps the excess yellow ones will look good as a piano key borders?

My finished Pineapple Dream quilt is waiting to be quilted!

Finished borders measure 1″ for inner green and 4″ for the yellow piano-key border. It measures 62″ x 84″, which is a bit bigger than I planned, but now it can be used on a bed!

I made very scrappy backing with odd fabrics and some orphaned blocks that didn’t make into any other quilts.

I’m cleaning up my notes on how much fabric this took and some other measurements, including the corners.
