Spring Baskets

Some time ago I purchased a lovely batik jelly roll – Restful Raindrops by Island Batiks. It was sitting around for a while, just waiting for the right pattern to come along! Originally, I was going to make the MSQ Co pattern called May Baskets. I liked the technique of making HSTs from strips.

Of course, I changed mine quilt up a bit and used the same background fabric for all blocks. Each WOF pair of strips yielded 18 HSTs, so 15 strips made 30 blocks and I now have 90 bonus blocks leftover! Not sure if I will add them as borders or save for another project.

Then I changed the setting. The original plan was to set blocks in rows with 1″ sashing. However, once I laid them out, the quilt looked boring. So I put the project aside until a new idea came along. And it sure did! A new quilty friend recommended Bonnie Hunter’s String Fling book, and I found my inspiration in the Charlotte’s Baskets pattern!

But here is a new problem – 30 10″ blocks set on point with setting triangles makes a HUGE quilt! 12 seemed like a better size for a lap quilt, and I have purple Minky for the backing. But what to do with the other 18 that are leftover? At this point, I will wait to decide until after the first quilt is made before making any more changes! Obviously, I will end up with 2 quilts. Not my original plan, but stay tuned…

Basket block set on point
Quilt layout

This is a large – 14″ with the basket blocks at 10″. It was originally supposed to be set in rows with sashing.

This setting just looked so much better to me! There will be sashing between the blocks with background fabric

I was able to make all the setting triangles in one evening – they were pretty easy once I figured out the math!

It took a couple of evenings of easy sewing to put the blocks together.

There will be a pattern for this quilt at some point. Please feel free to email any questions about this project or pattern!
