Club Stars Quilt-Along

We are making a Block of the month quilt along in 2020! Some of our member would like to use quilt-as-you-go technique, other may want to make a quilt top with all the sample blocks and then quilt it. We discussed the details at our first meeting on January 18, 2020.

The directions are for a 12″ finished block, but you can always scale them down if you are willing to do the math! I showed a 6″ block at the meeting for comparison.

The completed quilt will be about 40″ x 54″, without borders.

  • Fabric requirements for the quilt are:
    • Dark fabrics – 3/4 yard
    • Medium fabrics – 3/4 yard
    • Lights/Background – 1.5 yards – this will be used for sashing and/or joining blocks

Block 9 – Windmill Star

This our final block – I’ve named it the Windmill star. Its a bit more complicated but goes together pretty quickly.

The video link on the right is for basic unit construction, please use my sizes and directions for assembling your block.

Block 8 – Frayed Sawtooth Star

This is another fast and easy block – you need 4 FG and 8 4-patches. It will look best with 4 fabrics – 2 Mediums, one Dark and one Light.

Block 7 – Squared Sawtooth Star

This is a fun “double” star! Block 3a was the original Sawtooth Star block, so please check out that block post for more detailed direction on how to make various units.

Block 6 – Sister’s Choice Star

This is a traditional Sister’s choice block, using 4 fabrics. Dark, Light & two Mediums. Take a look below at the detailed steps for putting this lovely block together.

Block 5 – Key Lime Pie Star

This is a more challenging block – but its lots of fun to make! Below are some photos to help with the constriction of the units. Also, please refer to links for Block 4 for spinning seams.

Block 4 – Indiana Puzzle Star

Super easy and quick 9-patch block with HSTs! All you need it to make 8 HSTs and cut out a center square and you are done!

I found these helpful links on Bonnie Hunter’s website that show how to spin the seams and webb your quilt .

Below are the steps I used to make my block. I’m “webbing” the block as I sew the rows and columns together.

Block 3a – Sawtooth Star

This is a super-easy block, similar to 2a. You only need to make 4 Flying Geese units, all the other units are not pieced.

Here are more pics for constructing Flying Geese – same as block 3.

Block 3 – Magic Cross Star

Beautiful star block made with HSTs and Flying Geese units. You can get more dimension in this block by using 4 fabrics – 1 light, 1 dark, and 2 mediums

Since my technical advisor is currently indisposed, I was not able to do a video, but took details pics of how I made the Flying Geese and HST units.

Optional Block 2a – Sarah’s Choice Star

This is another optional block, very similar to January’s block, except for coloring.

Fun and fast Start block made with HSTs and squares in the corners. You could even make both optional blocks at the same time! Just pay attention to the placement.

Block 2 – Sawtooth 16-patch Star Block

Our second block is a variation Sawtooth Star with a 16-patch in the center. The center finishes at 6″ (6.5″ unfinished block) and it’s easily made using strip piecing method included in the instructions. I’m not longer providing the traditional cutting instructions as they were causing some confusion. The directions to make our block of the month will include my preferred methods, but please feel free to choose your favorite methods for making the units for these blocks.

Some of the links below to make HSTs and FG units are also helpful for this block.

This is a fun variation on a Star block made with 4 Flying Gees units, 4 HST units and a 16-patch block (4 – 4-patch units in the center).

Directions include strip piecing method to make the center – you just need some 2″ wide strips.

Optional Block 1a – Flower Star Block

This is an optional block that you could make while waiting for the next month reveal. It’s one of several optional blocks I will be posting to make make the quilt larger.

The best way to make this block is to use 4″ squares and make 2 HSTs at a time.

Block Instructions have been Updated! Please download a new version to make this block.

Block 1 – Ladder Star Block

I have updated the instructions for the first block – we had a number of questions during our February meeting and there was an error in the cutting directions.

Out first block is called Ladder Star. It will be a three color block – two mediums/darks and one light. The light fabric can be a uniform background fabric throughout the entire quilt, or you can choose a different light fabric for each block. Lots of options! Once we have the first set of blocks done, I will post pictures below. Currently this is a mock-up of the block:
